As you are aware, the United States has begun evacuating thousands of Afghans who worked for the US government ahead of the August 31 deadline for the end of operations in Afghanistan as part of Operation Allies Refuge.

Current and former Afghan translators, interpreters, and others who have worked with the US government in Afghanistan are facing deadly danger as the US drawdown continues and the Taliban reclaims territory once controlled by Afghan and coalition forces. The Special Immigrant Visa, or SIV, program allows Afghans who work or worked “by or on behalf of the U.S. government in Afghanistan,” as well as family members, to qualify for visas and lawful permanent resident status in the US.

Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains, and agencies like ours across the country, will begin welcoming our allies to Colorado and New Mexico. LFSRM team members will work closely with Lutheran Refugee and Immigration Service (LIRS), essential city partners and other community organizations and congregations to begin helping these important people resettle into our communities.

How can you help?

First and foremost, LFSRM is welcoming monetary donations rather than collecting donations of items. We have limited storage and do not know at this time how many individuals will arrive, family size, etc. Contributions give maximum flexibility to respond to needs as we learn of them. You can donate directly to LFSRM below. For additional donation information click here.

All donations made to the LFSRM Refugee Program help to support Afghan and other refugees.

LFSRM respects donor privacy and all donor information remains confidential. LFSRM will not share or sell a donor’s personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations. Donor information will only be shared if the donor has given specific permission to do so. Payments are securely processed by Blackbaud Merchant Services
