Understanding How the 2026 Tax Laws Can Impact Your Giving

The passage of the H.R.1. in the summer of 2025 made some changes to charitable giving for the 2026 tax year. Here are key changes for you to be aware of as you make gifts this year:

  • Nonitemizers: For those that take the standard deduction, you are now able to deduct up to $1,000 (single filer) or $2,000 (married filing jointly) in cash gifts to public charities each year.
  • Itemizers: For those that choose to itemize, only the portion of your annual gift above 0.5% of your adjusted grose income is deductible. To maximize your tax benefit, consider "bunching" your gift: combining multiple years of donations into one. Or you could use appreciated assets, such as stocks, to be efficient.
  • Donors age 70 1/2+: A gift straight from your IRA to a cause you care about, or a QCD, is excluded from your income, so the new floor and cap do not apply.
