In 1975, as the fall of Saigon was imminent, President Ford authorized Operation Babylift, a mass evacuation of children from South Vietnam to the U.S. and other countries. The first plane from Operation Babylift bound for Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines crashed, killing 138 people on board, most of whom are children. LFSRM is asked to assist with emergency placement of 34 of the survivors. These 34 children are place in 18 homes across the Front Range over the course of 2 days. During that same year, Lutheran Refugee Service (current day Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services) contacted LFSRM to begin resettlement of refugees beyond the children from Operation Babylift. More than 54 churches in Colorado sponsored refugee families during that time. Today, the Denver office is located off of 16th and Downing and is our largest office.
