Our Welcome and Respite Program in Albuquerque, New Mexico, welcomes families that have been released from federal immigration detention centers and provides respite care as these families continue their journey to sponsoring families across the United States. We offer them lodging, food, clothing, hygiene items, cellphone access, assistance arranging travel to their sponsoring families, transportation to the airport, and a friendly face. The individuals served are mothers with a child(ren) or fathers who have traveled with their children.
Partners at the LFSRM welcome site include: the City of Albuquerque, Annunciation House, St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, The Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Community of Joy Lutheran Church, All Saints Lutheran Church, Luther House, Albuquerque Mennonite Church, and volunteers from the community, this program is able to welcome approximately 50-80 people each week.
You Can Help!
The facility where the families are assisted is very centrally located in Albuquerque.
The following opportunities are available for congregational and individual assistance:
Intake Volunteers (Spanish speaking): Mondays from 2-8pm
Providing basic intakes and completing the intake form (first 1-1 contact with client)
Light administrative skills and strong interpersonal communication skills preferred.
Logistic Volunteers (High Level Spanish Speaking): Monday 4-9pm and Tuesday 9am-2pm
Communicating with family sponsors and assisting them in making travel arrangements across the country by bus or airlines. Task orientated, good with logistics, and savvy with technology.
Transportation Volunteers: Monday 6:30-9:00pm, Tuesday-Thursday all day or part day shifts available (minivans needed) Provide transportation to airport or bus station for client’s departure from Albuquerque.
Experienced drivers 21+, must be willing to use personal vehicle and carry current driver’s license and insurance.
Congregations to provide and possibly serve Lunch and Dinner meals: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs.
Ideally, a congregation will “adopt” a particular meal, such as Tuesday dinner, Wednesday lunch, etc. This a great opportunity for a group volunteer project. Spanish is not necessary and volunteers are welcome to join the families for the meal.
Mental Health Professional (Spanish Speaking): Monday 4-9 and Tuesday 9-2
Medical Professional (Spanish Speaking): Monday 4-9 and Tuesday 9-2 (UNM Health professionals are available for more serious medical concerns.)
Multiple-Service Volunteers (Spanish and English speaking): Mon 4-9pm or just part of the day. These individuals would spend time with guests during mealtimes answering simple questions like “how do I use a phone card” and maybe play games with children (we would only need one or two of these volunteers each day.)
To volunteer for any of these opportunities, please send an email to email@example.com.
